US: Gaming "significantly more diverse than workforce"

According to a new American Gaming Association (AGA) study, the gaming industry is "significantly" more diversified than the US workforce overall.

The trade association claims that compared to 52% of the wider hotel sector and 42% of the US workforce overall, 61% of gaming sector workers are racial minorities.

This includes the 19% black and the 23% of individuals working in hospitality from Hispanic backgrounds, both of which exceed the overall US workforce in general and are in line with the hotel sector specifically. With 14% of staff members of Asian background, the group is over-represented in the industry at almost twice the national average.

According to AGA president and CEO Bill Miller, consumers, legislators, and investors are increasing their expectations for all companies on how they support society outside of their profit margins. "Encompassing data from across commercial, tribal and manufacturing gaming verticals, the survey both highlights our industry's leadership on diversity while presenting areas for continued progress."

Enhanced circumstances
Among operators, this ethnic variety marks a change from the state of affairs ten years ago. Unlike the 60% recorded today, the proportion of operators from non-white origins in 2011 was somewhat close to 20%. From 12% in 2011, black personnel have likewise raised their share of the operator workforce—now forming 19% of the total.

Compared to the larger electronic manufacturing industry overall, game manufacturers also have a more varied workforce; 45% of its employees are minorities while 38% are in the sector overall.
